If, during a slide edit, a brand-new slide (or one from another deck) is added instead of editing the contents of original slide downloaded from Slidebank, then any virtual slides linked to the original will be unlinked. This is because the virtual slide won't be able to find its special tracking code, hidden inside the original slide, which tells the virtual slide where its 'mother' is.
β
However, it is sometimes possible to re-link such 'orphaned' virtual slides back to a newly replaced Master slide as follows:-
1) Slides with one or more virtual slides connected to them have a yellow spot shown underneath the slide's thumbnail in the Library.
Clicking the yellow spot shows any virtual presentations attached to that master slide.
2) However if, instead of just modifying the contents of an original slide during an edit, a fresh new master slide were to be inserted into the deck in its place, then any virtual slides that were connected to the original master slide will become 'orphaned'. This is because they can no longer find their special tracking code in the missing original master slide. If this happens, the normal 'Where Used' yellow-spot underneath the master slide will turn red after the edit and display a message to say that 'slide seems to be new, and may need re-linking to its previous version's virtual slides'
You will notice that such slides no longer have a history (clock face) button either, because their history is broken. These orphaned slides will also be missing from any virtual presentations since they have effectively been removed by replacing the original master slide (which contained the tracking code) with a new or different slidewithout a correct code.
3) For slides with a red spot, click the slide's three-dot menu and select the 'Relink Slide' option.
4) This opens a popup showing any virtual slides that belonged to the previous master file but which are now missing from the new version. Now click on the orphaned virtual slide you wish to relink - it should be obvious which to choose and when you click a slide in the Slide Relink popup, it will be relinked straight away. Repeat for any other red-spot slides with broken links.
5) After relinking, the slides will change to show a 'Where Used' yellow-spot once again, and a history button will re-appear.
You can click the history button to confirm that the slide now has a history, and the 'Where Used' yellow-spot to show the virtuals are relinked too.
6) Lastly, re-visit the virtual files to confirm that the slide history and virtuals have been repaired. They should now have all the virtual slides back in place.
The following Ability settings are needed to re-link virtual slides:-
Download Files in PowerPoint format (PPTX) - ENABLED
Upload Files OR Upload to Personal Folder Only - ENABLED
Save Master Presentations - ENABLED
Download Non-editable Slides Only - DISABLED
View History - ENABLED
In addition, to make changes to the Master file you must be either:-
